Property Description
The Lodge at the Old Dorm on Bowen Island, British Columbia is a lovingly-restored heritage bed and breakfast with the ambience of a character inn.
Its rural setting makes for a perfect island getaway - whether it's a personal or corporate retreat, an overnight escape or an extended stay to savour the nearby secluded beaches and forested trails. Minutes away, the quaint village of Snug Cove offers you a smorgasbord of casual and gourmet restaurants, pubs, gift shops and stores specializing in clothing, arts and crafts, books and organic treats.
The two-story, cedar-sheathed Lodge - intimately linked with Bowen's history - is completely refurbished with art-deco accents, fine art and intriguing artifacts from its past. Classic amenities include pedestal sinks and soaker tubs. An expansive rear patio opens on to a private garden.
Host Dan Parkin - whom Vancouver Best Places calls "a fine cook" - provides a generous breakfast in the bright, tastefully decorated dining room. Your day will begin with the very freshest of seasonal ingredients and warm-from-the-oven muffins, croissants and cinnamon buns. And Dan is happy to entertain guests' special dining requests.
The Lodge is the serene setting for a variety of corporate and institutional gatherings and educational workshops. The comfortably appointed living room is an ideal location for gatherings of all kinds, from sales conferences to art classes, and the atmosphere is conducive to good discussion and creativity. Experience the spirit of days gone by while enjoying the modern comforts and exceptional service in tranquil surroundings so close to - yet far away from - the city!
Location
Retrace the early steps of picnic day-trippers and moonlight dancers and follow the scenic promenade towards the historic Old Dorm. The six-minute stroll from the ferry terminal to the two-storey, barn-red lodge may be one of the West Coast's most charming, scenic, little walkways.
Ducks and geese splash in the quiet lagoon while gently rippling waves lap against the beach. A view of the sea and Coast Mountains stretches to the mainland. The 52-square-kilometre Bowen Island and its moderate climate offer year-round activities. Recreation, relaxation and entertainment are minutes away.
Rent a sea kayak and explore the 37 kilometres of rugged island coastline.
Dine in cafes, restaurants or a waterfront pub.
Embark on a hike through Crippen Regional Park, around Killarney Lake, or to the top of Mount Gardner for a panoramic view of Georgia Strait.
Shop the specialty stores located in picturesque Snug Cove, or nearby Artisan Square.
Fish the scenic coastal waters.
Lounge on public beaches in Mannion Bay or Bowen Bay.
Or, perhaps just read a good book on the Lodge's private deck.
Whatever the season, Bowen Island's varied activities are sure to please guests of all tastes.
The Island is also home to much wildlife. Guests may view bald eagles soaring overhead, herons fishing quietly in tidal pools, or perhaps deer nibbling on wild grasses. Come and enjoy the carefree spirit and charm that has long drawn visitors to the "Happy Isle".
